Publisher Showcase: Gankster

Welcome back to Publisher Showcase, where we highlight the founders and platforms across the Nitro network building meaningful gaming experiences for players worldwide.

This month, we’re spotlighting Gankster, a platform that grew out of competitive gaming roots in Counter-Strike and Dota 2 and was first created to help pro teams connect for scrims. What began as a solution for organized competition has since expanded into something much broader and now serves as a social platform focused on helping players build friendships and reduce digital loneliness across gaming communities.

Read on to discover how Gankster evolved from a competitive tool into a mission-driven platform built around connection. 👇

First up, can you tell us a bit about your career/life background that led you to start Gankster?

We come from a background of competitive gaming, starting back in the days of Counter-Strike and Dota 2. We were constantly looking for ways to level up and find other teams to play against.

We originally built Gankster to help professional teams connect; at the time, the "scrim" scene was trapped in closed groups, making it hard to find new practice partners.

What drove you to create Gankster? Did you see a specific gap in the market? Was there a particular insight that motivated you to launch it?

Once we secured most of the competitive scene in Valorant, League, and Rocket League, we realized there was a much bigger mission. Many of us on the team were starting families, and we found it increasingly difficult to get a full squad together for a match.

We realized that casual players faced this same "digital loneliness." That’s why we expanded into LFG and our Duo Finder—to help players find friends, reduce toxicity, and make gaming social again.

How long have you been running your website and how long did it take from development until it was live?

We’ve been running Gankster for four years now, and we invested almost nine months into the initial website and product development before launching.

The initial phase of perfecting user flows and building an early audience, especially for a social platform, is just as important as maintaining it. You need to have flawless user flows so players understand exactly where to go and what to do, paired with solid user acquisition and shareability to keep the momentum going.

How did you decide on the specific features and tools available on Gankster?

We treated ourselves as the core audience, so we started by listing every feature we wanted in our ideal platform. From there, we began scratching off anything that we didn't think was absolutely mandatory for the initial launch.

We prioritized our minimum viable product first and then expanded into new groups of features that would provide full value as independent additions. Our focus is always on the value that the users get from the feature itself, followed by the subsequent benefits it provides to Gankster, such as shareability, retention, and revenue.

How were you able to build a strong online presence for the website?

Gankster started through word of mouth, targeting influential communities and spreading the word within them. Our alpha users were urged to write on social media during the launch and share the platform with friends and family to help create a tight-knit community.

Later on, we also improved our SEO by targeting long-tail keywords that resonate with our audience, and we formed partnerships with top-tier influencers and other community initiatives. We try to focus on collaborations that are mutually beneficial and are fully endemic to both parties.

Has AI changed how you manage or grow your website?

Our highest level of AI integration is in our internal processes, whether it’s content moderation, player matching, or product ideation. We see AI as a positive supplement to our strong team and a great assistance, but never a replacement.

We are also seeing a higher referral rate from AI-based searches, and we have created additional content within our website to attract such traffic while refining how we appear on platforms like Gemini or ChatGPT.

What are you most proud of in regards to the success of Gankster so far? Any major highlights?

My biggest highlight is the success stories we see on a daily basis, where individuals contact us to say they were able to make real friends through Gankster.

It means a lot to know they can come to a platform that helps them find people to play with during times of loneliness or hardship. Being a force for good on the internet and helping people navigate the struggles of life is what motivates me every day to build a better platform for gamers.

What advice do you have for new and existing website owners that you wish you knew before you started?

This might sound cliché, but I would say focus on what you do best and your most significant differentiator. Talk with your audience and understand their needs, but don’t take it as if the customer is always right.

Build what you believe in and do what you’re passionate about. What attracts the audience is not always the most polished product, but the passion that is projected through your work.

What do you like best about being a part of Nitro’s network of premium gaming/entertainment websites?

Being part of Nitro’s network, we know that we are driving relevant content to our audience. We are able to deliver brand-safe advertisements and gaming-specific campaigns, creating a better ad experience for our users and ensuring we aren't driving irrelevant or harmful content to them.

What’s next for Gankster?

Gankster is on a mission to reduce digital loneliness and toxicity in gaming. We are always expanding our offerings to include new games and features that create meaningful connections between players and the games they love, as well as providing discoverability for new experiences they might enjoy.
